Christos Bokoros is showing his work at the D. Luís I Foundation, in Cascais, until May 25th. Under the title “Towards the bare essentials” the painter is showing “The bare essentials” and some representative previous works: “An ancient way to illuminate black squares”, “Candles” and “Signs of Freedom“. The organisation had the participation of the Greek Embassy in Portugal and the exhibition is part of the events marking the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The private view was highlighted by the presence of representatives of the political and artistic world. Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. António Monteiro, were amongst the guests, as well as the Secretary of State for European Affairs, Mr. Bruno Maçães, and the Secretary General of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ana Martinho. The President of the Republic was represented by Ambassador Luísa Bastos, Diplomatic Counsellor to the President, Mr. Cavaco Silva. The Secretary of State for Culture was represented by the General Director for the Arts, Mr. Samuel Rego.

In his address to those present, the Ambassador of Greece in Portugal, Mr. Panos Kalogeropoulos, said: “The Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union here in Portugal could not be introduced with a better omen for its successful course, than the first Exhibition in this country of paintings by Christos Th. Bokoros. Including the exhibition “Towards the bare essentials” into the local Programme of the Greek Presidency constitutes an honour both for Greece and the Presidency. At the sad end to an era of excessive consumerism and cerefree alienation from values, the work of Christos Bokoros reminds us what was the very essence of the starting point and where we have to return, in order to recover, not only our dignity and self-sufficiency, but also our distinct temperament as Greeks, and, ultimately, the true quality of life”.

The Mayor of Cascais, Mr. Carlos Carreiras, stressed: “Upon the commemoration of the 650th anniversary of the City Council of Cascais, this exhibition is a symbol for Europe, in what Greece means in terms of the foundations of our Culture. In this difficult moment, more than ever, our gaze turns to Greece and Greece’s turns to us. With this shared gaze, in our differences, we can get better by learning from each other, by finding common ground and filling gaps through Art. Our identity is related to our culture and it is to such anchors that we have to hold on to.”

The President of the Dom Luís I Foundation, Mr. Salvato Teles de Menezes, said: “We knew the Painter only through the excellence of his texts on Philosophy of Art, now matched by the display of his creative work.”

Christos Bokoros thanked all those who helped build this bridge of communication and stressed that Culture is not merely the works of Art, but the consciousness of their value and our will to share them.
